Program Overview
A broad and thorough understanding of the fundamentals of physics, rather than specialized skills; graduates go on to graduate work in many sciences or to academic, industrial and government laboratories. How competitive: for fall 2025, UC Berkeley admitted 11% of its 126,864 first-year applicants; it publishes no separate figure for international applicants. UC sets no IB minimum and no subject requirement: international applicants must finish secondary school and be eligible for a competitive university at home, predicted IB scores are never the only factor, and SAT or ACT scores are not considered. You choose this major as your primary major when you apply, and Berkeley reviews only that choice. In Letters & Science, if you are admitted with this as your primary major you are guaranteed a place in it (High Demand Majors policy).
